Living Vs Non-living Informative writing


Hi,

This is a lesson idea that links Science, English and Digital Technology together and is based around a grade 3 class.

Overview

Students are learning about living things and how they can be grouped based on observable features, and distinguished from non-living things. Students would have previously collected data of the various living and non-living things that are found in their school, and grouped them into those classifications. Students can capture the living and non-living things with a camera for use in the next section of the lesson. To present this data in a meaningful way, students would use the program ‘scratch’ and include the pictures they had taken to create an informative type piece of writing, whereby the participant can click on an object and get a description of why it is classified as a living or non-living thing, as well as any additional information. This would assume that students have completed research on those living and non-living things prior to using scratch.

Digital Technology
