Unit 2 Task 1

Computer Science Fundamentals Unit 2 MOOC

  1. Explain what you think are some of the key differences between cyber security, cyber awareness and cyber safety. To what extent are you teaching these in the classroom or to what extent do you think they should be taught and why?

Within computer science and the use of technology, the areas of cyber security, awareness and safety are extremely critical elements for both teachers and students to understand. Although these different headings surrounding computer science seem to represent the same thing, it is important to recognize the true meaning behind these components and how they differ. Cyber security can be defined as the practice of protecting computers, networks, programs, and data from digital attacks. Unlike the other two elements, Cyber security focuses heavily on safety by design and managing systems opposed to providing in depth knowledge or skills on how to navigate technology. Although Cyber Security does teach skills and knowledge on how to navigate technology, it is minimal compared to the other two components and is more concentrated towards the user’s external environment and limiting threats. Cyber safety involves the knowledge and skills we can adapt to ensure we behave safely and responsibly online. This constituent focuses heavily on the individuals’ actions and teaching children how they can behave in a safe way online for both themselves and others. In contrast to the other two categories, Cyber Safety focuses more the users own behaviour instead of worrying about external stimulus. Lastly, Cyber Awareness is the knowledge, attitude and behaviours that aim to protect our information assets. Unlike the other two elements, Cyber Awareness teaches children how to safeguard their information through education and policy by highlighting what types of data they should or should not be sharing to others whilst online. This is also impacted by whom they intend to share their information with such as family, friends or publicly to the whole world. As can be seen, all of these categories provide their own distinct benefits, skills and knowledge surrounding the safe use of technology. Because of this I personally believe these elements should be taught heavily in schools from a young age as the world is becoming less tangible and far more virtualised through currencies such as crypto and new online platforms such as Facebooks newly released Metaverse. Therefore, the sooner we are able to provide children with the necessary tools to safely utilise technology the better.
